Legally, a woman can't be elected president
*headdesk*
I wonder if it has occurred to Dick Marple that, by his logic, a black person can't be elected president, either. Or that, by his logic, only women and black people would be unable to be elected president. (Provided the candidate meets the age and country of birth requirements, of course.)
What a dick marple moron. |

[Jan. 26th, 2008|10:25 pm] |
I wonder who I'd have gotten if Bill Richardson were still on the list.
If I were to be a one-issue voter on the topic of reproductive rights, based on what's here, I'd have to go with Edwards or Clinton. I'm actually thoroughly impressed with their positions.
I was also impressed to see John Edwards say this:
As president, I will protect and defend the right to reproductive choices and reverse the damage that's been done by President Bush and this Supreme Court. That includes nominating judges who have demonstrated their commitment to Americans' full range of constitutional protections.
THAT, boys and girls, is how a Supreme Court is SUPPOSED to operate: not with liberal or conservative judges. With judges who know how to do their jobs.
(As an aside, my top Republican match was Huckabee? O_o) |

[Jan. 26th, 2008|05:02 pm] |
I'm not fond of .pdf format--I think it's unnecessarily awkward and bulky--but it's definitely useful in some situations. When you have to scan a large document that isn't really re-typeable, for example. Gaming manuals. If you do it right, it makes a decent "fill in the blanks and print" page.
You know what isn't an appropriate and needed reason for .pdf format?
THE FUCKING MATH 117 SYLLABUS. |

| JOHN STEWART: 1939-2008 |
[Jan. 20th, 2008|07:43 pm] |
Oh, damn. John Stewart died.
In the quiet of the dawn, a little soul is born. Put him in a blanket to see if he is warm. Hold him very close, just as closely as you can, For he'll never ever be that little soul again.
On a summer morning there's a little boy at play, Discovering the world, that will be his one day. Watch him very close, just as closely as you can, For he'll never ever be that young boy again.
On an autumn afternoon a young man goes to learn How to build the bridges and makes the wheels to turn. And woman you will love him just as often as you can, For he'll never ever be that young man again.
On a lonely midnight winter an old man goes to sleep, Leaving everything he owned for other men to keep. And the earth will hold him close, just as closely as it can, For he'll never ever be that old man again.
Gone a life of yearning, a heart that's old and worn. And in the quiet of the dawn a little soul is born.

AP: Richardson ends presidential bid
When a man with those credentials and experience can't even make it through the primaries, something is drastically wrong with the process.*
I plan to spend most of 2009 answering socio-economic and political complaints with, "You fuckers got the government you deserved. Good job."
And while I'm on a politics tangent, stop fucking talking about the polls. We are innundated with polls in this country, to the point that we are being influenced by the polls, instead of influencing the polls. I said this years ago, and you fuckers in the media are only now just deciding to admit that maybe, just maybe, this country is drowning in polls and is becoming unable to think without being told what to think?
I think maybe I need a sabbatical. Until December or so. I can't be this frustrated for 11 months.
*It's not like I expected him to get the nomination, but I cannot help but be simply floored that this man couldn't even get press because we're all too busy starfucking to actually pay attention. |

| CROCK O' CAUCUSING |
[Jan. 3rd, 2008|07:30 pm] |
The more elections I live through, the more convinced I become that the media selects our representation. Not the "liberal media" or the "right-wing media" or whatever bent people are insisting the media has now. The starfucker media. The people who make their living talking about, tearing down, dissecting other people--making up whatever the hell suits their purpose, or that of their higher-ups, this week. That media. (I could post the spreadsheet I keep to prove a point here, but that's probably not necessary. Let me just say that the hatchet job done on Gore in 2000--the one where there were at least 2 negative articles for every even neutral article on Bush? That's been blown away by the beating Clinton's taken the last few months.)
This is also the first time I've gone digging to find out exactly how we go about this process. Yes, yes, electoral college, blah blah blah. But caucusing? I had no idea. And insomuchas I think the electoral college has way outlived its usefulness, this whole caucusing thing? It's a pretty big bunch of nonsense, too.
I thought this was a decent opinion piece on the value of caucusing. (Yes, it's from a libertarian/center-right website. But it's a libertarian/center-right website that acts as a clearinghouse for political news and thus far, I'm finding it a pretty interesting read.) |

| HNY |
[Jan. 1st, 2008|12:06 am] |
Alright, it's officially the New Year in all three time zones I've lived in during my lifetime. So I can post now.
The Old Year has gone. Let the dead past bury its own dead. The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time. All hail the duties and possibilities of the coming twelve months! ~~Edward Payson Powell
For last year's words belong to last year's language And next year's words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning. ~~T.S. Eliot, "Little Gidding"
And ye, who have met with Adversity's blast, And been bow'd to the earth by its fury; To whom the Twelve Months, that have recently pass'd Were as harsh as a prejudiced jury - Still, fill to the Future! and join in our chime, The regrets of remembrance to cozen, And having obtained a New Trial of Time, Shout in hopes of a kindlier dozen. ~~Thomas Hood
525,600 minutes...525,000 moment so dear 525,600 minutes...how do you measure--measure a year? In daylights--in sunsets--in midnights, in cups of coffee In inches--in miles, in laughter, in strife, in 525,600 minutes...how do you measure a year in the life? How about love? ~~"Seasons of Love," RENT
Happy New Year, dear ones. |

B: "Damn." M: "What are you reading?" B: "More stuff about Bhutto being killed." M: "Yeah, I heard about that earlier, but I don't know enough about who she was to understand the implications." B: "Do the words "Archduke Franz Ferdinand" ring a bell?" M: "I really hope that's hyperbole on your part." B: "Yeah, I really wish I could believe it was."
In light of that, and my history geekitude, the Washington Post had an article worth reading on the subject. And in case the WP wants you to register, the text is under the cut.
